Food delivery for restaurants: app, own drivers or both
Marketplaces bring discovery and delivery drivers, at a percentage of every order. Your own channel costs a flat fee, and you deliver with your own staff or a delivery partner you choose, or offer pickup. Most restaurants use the apps for new customers and their own ordering for regulars.
Fee on a $30 order, app by app
| Channel ($30 delivery order) | Fee rule (published) | Fee on $30 |
|---|---|---|
| Uber Eats Lite / Plus / Premium | 20% / 25% / 30% | $6.00 / $7.50 / $9.00 |
| DoorDash Basic / Plus / Premier | 20% / 25% / 29% | $6.00 / $7.50 / $8.70 |
| Your own ordering page, card fee only | 2.9% + C$0.30 (Stripe standard) | $1.17 |
| Your own page + DoorDash Drive delivery | card fee + $8.50 flat | $1.17 + $8.50 |
Arithmetic on published rates (Uber Eats Canada merchant pricing; DoorDash Canada merchant pricing; Stripe Canada pricing; checked 27 October 2026). App fees exclude tablet fees, promotions and refunds; your own channel excludes your monthly software fee ($35 for Chefzi) and any delivery you run yourself.
What to compare beyond the commission rate
- Tablet or device fees (DoorDash charges $3 a week in Canada if you use their tablet).
- Paid promotions and in-app ads, charged on top of commission.
- Who pays for refunds and missing-item complaints.
- Whether you get the customer’s email or phone number.
- Contract length and how to leave.
- Pickup rates, which are much lower than delivery rates on both Uber Eats and DoorDash.
Delivery without a marketplace commission
Commission-free ordering does not mean you have to run drivers. Three common options in Canada:
| Option | How it is priced | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash Drive On-Demand | Flat $8.50 per delivery (DoorDash Canada) | Pay per trip; DoorDash drivers |
| Uber Direct | Distance-based price per delivery (Uber Eats Canada) | Quote varies by distance |
| Your own drivers | Wages or per-delivery pay you set | Most control; you manage scheduling and insurance |

Frequently asked questions
What are the main delivery apps for restaurants in Canada?
Uber Eats, DoorDash and SkipTheDishes are the main national marketplaces.
Which delivery app charges restaurants the least?
On published Canadian plans, the lowest delivery commission is 20% on DoorDash Basic and Uber Eats Lite, or 15% on Uber Eats self-delivery. Lower tiers reach fewer customers.
Can I take delivery orders without an app?
Yes. Take orders on your own ordering website and deliver with your own drivers or a delivery partner.
What is the cheapest delivery app for restaurants in Canada?
On published rates, the lowest delivery tiers are Uber Eats Lite and DoorDash Basic at 20%. SkipTheDishes does not publish a rate card. Your own ordering page with a flat delivery service is usually cheaper per order.
Should I leave the delivery apps?
Usually not entirely. Apps bring new customers; your own ordering page keeps repeat orders commission-free.
Can I deliver orders from my own website without drivers?
Yes. DoorDash Drive and Uber Direct deliver orders placed on your own site, priced per delivery.
How do I add delivery to my restaurant?
Three ways: list on the delivery apps, take orders on your own page and use an on-demand courier (DoorDash Drive, Uber Direct), or use your own drivers. Many restaurants combine them.
