A SkipTheDishes alternative for Canadian restaurants

SkipTheDishes is one of the most familiar delivery apps in Canada. It brings new customers, but takes commission on every order, including your regulars’.

What SkipTheDishes charges restaurants in Canada

SkipTheDishes was founded in Saskatoon in 2012 and bought by Just Eat in December 2016 (CBC News). We did not find a public rate card for Canadian restaurants, so use the commission in your own Skip agreement.

Compare Skip with the published rates

SkipTheDishes does not publish a Canadian rate card, so put your own Skip commission next to the published Uber Eats and DoorDash rates and your own-channel cost:

Channel ($30 delivery order)Fee rule (published)Fee on $30
Uber Eats Lite / Plus / Premium20% / 25% / 30%$6.00 / $7.50 / $9.00
DoorDash Basic / Plus / Premier20% / 25% / 29%$6.00 / $7.50 / $8.70
Your own ordering page, card fee only2.9% + C$0.30 (Stripe standard)$1.17
Your own page + DoorDash Drive deliverycard fee + $8.50 flat$1.17 + $8.50

Arithmetic on published rates (Uber Eats Canada merchant pricing; DoorDash Canada merchant pricing; Stripe Canada pricing; checked 27 October 2026). App fees exclude tablet fees, promotions and refunds; your own channel excludes your monthly software fee ($35 for Chefzi) and any delivery you run yourself.

Questions to ask about your Skip agreement

  • What commission applies to delivery and to pickup?
  • Are there tablet, marketing or setup fees?
  • Who pays for refunds and complaints?
  • How long is the term, and how do I cancel?
  • Can I see customer contact details?

SkipTheDishes or your own ordering channel?

SkipTheDishes is a marketplace: it brings you customers who might never have found you, and charges commission on every order it handles, including orders from regulars who would have ordered from you anyway.

Your own ordering website costs a flat fee instead, so moving repeat orders to it lowers your cost per order. Most restaurants keep the marketplace for reach.

How to move regulars off the app

  • Put your own ordering link on your Google listing, website and social pages.
  • Add a card or QR code in each bag that points to your ordering page.
  • Offer pickup at your own prices, with no app markup.
  • Use your customer list for a returning-customer offer.

What Chefzi gives you

  • Flat monthly fee in CAD, no commission per order (pricing).
  • Your own customer list.
  • English and French ordering pages.
  • Delivery with your own zones, pickup and table orders.

What restaurants report about SkipTheDishes

Recurring points in public reviews and reporting. These are individual accounts, not a survey; many restaurants also say Skip brings them customers.

  • Commission cost: owners in Peterborough told Peterborough Currents that commissions ran 25–30% and that app orders barely broke even; one raised app prices to compensate.
  • In Quebec, a restaurant sought a class action claiming commissions above 15% were abusive; Skip asked for the case to go to arbitration (Registre des actions collectives du Québec). No ruling on the merits is implied here.
  • Partner app limits: App Store reviewers mention not being able to edit the menu or create promotions in the app, and needing a dedicated printer (Skip Partner app reviews, App Store Canada).
  • Support and payouts: a restaurant partner on Trustpilot reported months of unpaid earnings (April 2025).
  • What differs with your own channel: no commission on orders from your page. On chefzi.co.uk (checked 27 October 2026), Chefzi lists 0% commission, no setup fee and month-to-month plans. In Canada, plans are month-to-month with discounts on 1-, 2- and 3-year plans, and menu setup and onboarding are free. Many restaurants keep Skip for new customers and move regulars to their own page.

Chefzi pricing

  • Cash and pickup: $17 CAD per location per month.
  • Card payments: $35 CAD per location per month.
  • Setup is free. Plans are month-to-month, with no commission per order. See pricing.
