Three kinds of QR code menu
| Type | What the guest sees | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| QR code to a PDF | Your printed menu as a file | A quick start; poor on phones |
| QR code to a menu web page | A mobile menu that you can edit | Most restaurants |
| QR code to ordering | Menu plus cart and payment, at the table or for pickup | Counter service, patios, busy rooms |
How to make a QR code menu, step by step
- Put your menu on a web page as text, with prices, allergens and photos. Avoid a PDF if you can: it is hard to read on a phone.
- Use a dynamic QR code (or a code that points to a page on your own domain) so you can change the menu without reprinting.
- Generate the code and test it on iPhone and Android, in low light, from the distance a seated guest would scan.
- Print it at least 2–3 cm wide with a quiet margin around it, plus a short line such as “Scan for the menu”.
- Keep a few paper menus for guests who prefer them.

When a menu QR code should become ordering
If guests often wait for a server just to order, or you run counter service or a patio, a QR code that opens an ordering page can speed things up. Check how orders reach the kitchen, how tips and bill splitting work, and in Quebec how sales are recorded in your certified SRS (Revenu Québec, restaurant sector (SRS / WEB-SRM)).
Where Chefzi fits
Chefzi is a commission-free online ordering system for Canadian restaurants: your own ordering page in English and French, for a flat $35 a month. A QR code can point to your Chefzi ordering page for pickup and delivery; Chefzi also takes table orders from the same menu. If that sounds useful, book a 15-minute demo and we will show you your own menu in it. No pressure if you are just researching.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free QR code menu?
Yes. Some Canadian providers offer a free menu page with a QR code, and any QR generator can point to a menu page on your own website.
Static or dynamic QR code?
Dynamic, or a code pointing to a stable page on your own domain. You can then change the menu without reprinting the code.
Should my QR menu be a PDF?
Preferably not. A text web page is easier to read on a phone and easier to update.
